R&B Lost One Of Its Super Icons - Dead At 59 - Teddy

R&B lost ones of its great ones, super icon, Teddy Pendergrass, dies at 59! He passed away this month due to complications from his car accident in 1982.

He was considered one of the most sexy singers of all times. He was also considered to be one of the most potent sex symbols of his musical generation.

While the music world loves to embellish legends about the appeal of sultry male singers, Pendergrass' impact at the height of his career in the late 1970s and early 1980s needs little enhancing.

He developed a stage style that played with no shame to the ladies, who would leave a Pendergrass show feeling like he'd been singing to them alone. He eventually began playing "For Women Only" concerts where attendees would each be issued a stuffed teddy bear to hold as his surrogate during the show.

His reputation grew large enough that he was copied by other singers and parodied by comedians – a stature he never would have achieved if he hadn't also been making first-class music.

Not everyone knows that he got his start as the drummer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. He had started as the drummer but Melvin quickly noticed his great voice and potential and soon promoted him to lead singer. This was at the age of 20.

Perhaps my favorite was his hit from the seventies, "If You Don't Know Me By Now." This recording is still going strong here almost four decades later!

TEDDYS' CAREER

Teddy got his start in the musical business as a drummer for the band known as the Cadillacs. At one point they merged with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. This was when Melvin had asked Teddy to become his lead singer.

Mr. Pendergrass, affectionally known as the 'Teddy Bear' released many hit singles and his first solo album titled Teddy Pendergrass in 1977 after he left the Blue Notes due to a personality clash with Melvin. This was when he launched his solo career.

THE ACCIDENT

Pendergrass was involved in a car accident on March 18, 1982. The brakes had failed on his car and he hit a tree, resulting in him being paralyzed from the waist down. He had suffered a spinal cord injury. After spending six months in rehabilitation, Teddy returned to his studio to record his album, Love Language in 1984. This featured a duet with Whitney Houston.
